Most of our time especially when we like surfing the or if we simply love computers or macs we usually encounter DVD’s but did you ever wonder what the labels mean? DVD-R or DVD+R? Specifically “8x DVD R Media”?

Before knowing what DVD-R and DVD+R means let us know first what a DVD is. DVD stands for Digital Versatile/Video Disc. A DVD-R is a write-once format and it is almost the same as the CD-R Media, once you’ve burned the data onto that DVD platter the data is permanent. The information on the disk can never be changes and will be there forever. This is the first DVD format released which is compatible to most DVD-ROM players. This was first used in a stand alone DVD player. The storage capacity of a Blank DVD-R is usually 4.7GB.

DVD+R is almost the same as DVD-R. DVD+R is a recordable DVD format similar to CD-R. A DVD+R can record data only once and then the data becomes permanent on the disc. The disc can not be recorded onto a second time. The plus formats have the same data storage capacity as the minus formats (4.7GB). If you have a DVD+RW or DVD Read Write this means that the DVD can be used more than once or the DVD is rewritable and it offers faster writing, better internal linking , and support for drag-and-drop desktop files, which makes it easier to compose the contents of a disk.

8x in a DVD R media is the speed or it is simply the amount of time it takes to record data on to a disk would change accordingly with the writing speed of a recorder, the amount of information, and the writing mode set by the software/firmware.
