I scanned my computer with Symantec. It stopped right after it tries to scan the boot sector and it gives a message "Scanning stop by user", which I didn't stop the scanning. It doesn't say wheter if I have a virus or not. The scanning stops after a few seconds of starting. I also used a free version of McAffe to scan my computer and it said there's no virus found. Do you know if free scanning software will scan the boot sector?

Try running scanning your computer, it will display where the virus is located. The virus cannot be deleted unless you use this method.

How do I know if I have a boot sector virus? I scanned my computer and it stopped immediately. I saw a quick message "Scanning Boot Sector" and then the scanning stopped.

how about people with windows vista who have the same issue as above? I have an acer laptop that cane with vista and acer program all together, no separate discs. I have formatted twice and reinstalled but it is still doing the same thing. I want to know how I can get rid of the virus thing when it starts up as in my bios setup there is no option to disable it. Have tried all suggestions on websites, your suggestion sounds good but its only for XP, so if u have a solution for vista I would love to hear it.
thanx
