The problem should be somewhere on the backup files. You should try to slave the drive and have it scanned.

Thought I had a HD crash. Last Sat tried to boot up my laptop - after the BIOS read, just got a black screen with a cursor in top left. Nothing that I have could get the computer's attention. There is something very weird going on with the boot sector. Please read on.

Pulled the drive and put on a desktop via a usb connection. I was able to see the files so I backed it up with DriveImageXML. Restored to a new identical drive and reinstalled. Same problem. Did the fixmbr (and also fixboot) and got the same problem. Looks like the backup brought the problem to the new drive.

Now the new drive is totally screwed up. Nothing can read or even partition it. What does this sound like?
